fashion on the streets of NYC

Martine Reid – Sydney based Women’s fashion designer and style guru, currently shopping up a storm in New York.

“Summer 2011 is all about femininity.
Mixed and matched prints.
Delicate florals, vivid stripes and striking checks. Cut out fabrics, chambray and gingham.
Bright knits-watermelon a key colour in all categories.
Animal prints still going strong and seeing safari as a major trend.
The mid length skirt everywhere-gone is the maxi skirt..hooray – boring and not a good look if you are over a size 8!

I will send update from london.
I expect to see lots of floral.”

  1. Thank goodness for the downfall of maxi. As Martine says, bigger women might be happy, but can’t you also hear the cheering from us shorties down here? Not sure about the safari look-vivid stripes-check-mish mash though.

    • Trends are generally about disposable fashion – it is supposed to make us yearn for the new and get excited about spending more. At the end of the day your money is better spent making you feel good about yourself, feeling comfortable and displaying your own sense of style. If you feel that the trend doesn’t do that for you – but you still want to feel your wardrobe and dressing has been refreshed and you are keeping up with the latest looks then introduce fashions’ latest colour in a style that is flattering or splash out on accessories. The latest handbag, shoes or jewellery can state you are keeping up with the hot trends better than an unflattering outfit that makes you feel uncomfortable and not yourself.
